Success with agile methods

Digitalization means that companies have to respond quickly to changing customer needs and market requirements. The technology is already available for this. Nevertheless, projects often fail. The reason for this is often the rigid structures in the company, which prevent fast and flexible adaptation. Adaptability, flexibility and innovation are suppressed. It is therefore crucial that companies rely on agile methods for their work processes.

Agile methods build a framework for team collaboration and communication based on the distribution and definition of roles, tools and meetings. Principles, values and practices are combined into a coherent process. Autonomy and decisions are placed in the hands of the implementing teams. Ongoing communication practices and rituals lead to efficient processes with maximum transparency.

Scrum is certainly the best known agile method, this pursues the goal of giving the team clear structures with a clearly defined work process based on agile principles and values. The so-called Scrum team works in short iterations of 1 to 4 weeks (sprints) on the completion of concrete work results. At the end of each sprint there is a presentation of the results to get feedback. The product owner prioritizes the open tasks while the developers implement them. The Scrum Master is responsible for the implementation of the Scrum process by the responsible team. Here, each sprint begins with a planning phase and ends with a review.

In summary, agile methods and especially Scrum respond to and solve 2 core problems: On the one hand, the high speed at which ongoing projects are to be completed, which often run into the problem that customer and market requirements can change quickly. On the other hand, deviations from the plan are now the rule rather than the exception; this requires flexible and fast action. Agile methods enable the company to respond to these requirements in a promising way.
