Leadership 4.0

Adaptation through Adaptive Leadership

Dynamic situations overwhelm existing ways of thinking. When uncertainties and complexity arise, tried-and-tested management methods often fail. Especially in times when one change follows the next and digitization turns the working world upside down, leadership as "creating order" reaches its limits, the negative sides of fixed structures, routinized ways of working and inflexible leadership become apparent. The solution is offered by the concept of adaptive leadership.

Adaptive leadership is a concept that enables people and organizations to adapt quickly to complex changes and to take new paths. The goal is to reduce behavioral patterns that hinder the necessary adaptation process and to enable conscious confrontation with the situation and the changes. Rules and guidelines that were promising and up-to-date yesterday may already be outdated and obstructive today. In this context, it is important not to cling to old concepts or processes, along the lines of "we've always done it this way. It is crucial to perceive necessary changes and to implement them. This requires courage to go against the tried-and-true system and take a new leadership path. Not only should the manager be courageous, but the employees should also be encouraged by adaptive leadership to take on new tasks or to rethink outdated approaches and introduce new, more efficient ones. This requires a culture of trust within the company. After all, employees will only change their familiar and safe practices and ways if they are convinced that the new path taken will prove successful. To achieve this, trust in leadership is needed.

Situated and aligned, the adaptive leadership style represents a central and promising answer to the challenges of the current dynamic changes. With the adaptive leadership style, it is possible to take into account the diversity and different needs of employees while meeting the requirements of the company's success.
