The leadership culture in Corona times

Retrospective as a development tool

The pandemic has changed the framework conditions of many companies; fast and agile action is often required. Adaptability and self-organization are becoming the new basic requirements - the work culture is experiencing a transformation. As workplaces are being moved to home offices, communication is becoming more important than ever. Regular feedback loops particularly promote the self-organization of teams.

In traditional project management, however, detailed feedback rounds on collaboration are usually far too infrequent. How effective is the work in the team really? How do the processes run? After the projects are completed, these and many other questions are sometimes revealed, known as "lessons learned". However, the uncovering of weaknesses during the process is unfortunately missing here.

Retrospectives have therefore become established in agile teams. They are part of the Scrum Sprints, a method of agile software development. The sprints take place at regular intervals and provide the basis for identifying possible discrepancies. This can promote cooperation among each other as well as the effectiveness of the work. Ambiguities are uncovered and a continuous improvement process is brought about.

The procedure for such meetings is not prescribed. However, it is generally recommended to go through these five phases:

1. define the framework conditions for the meeting

2. pick up topics where there is a need for discussion

3. develop insights

4. make decisions to avoid these issues

5. concluding the sprint with documentation results

In summary, three core topics crystallize here: measurement, analysis, and implementation. The three areas should always be considered in the different project phases. An evaluation of the work in the team creates added value and promotes development despite the uncertain times and new challenges.
